SHAMS LAB
PEROVSKITES / PHOTOVOLTAICS / MEDICAL IMAGING
Shams means “the Sun” in Tajiki, the mother tongue of our PI. It symbolizes the essence of our mission: transforming sunlight into electricity.
And Shams carries a deeper meaning: it honors the PI’s beloved nephew, Shamsullah, who passed away at 22 after being diagnosed with a devastating disease. In addition to advancing solar energy technologies, our lab is equally committed to developing safe and affordable medical diagnostic devices.
Our Shams Lab stands as a tribute to Shamsullah's memory, and as a constant reminder of our dual mission: powering a sustainable world and enabling better healthcare for all.
We believe access to energy and healthcare should not depend on where you live. That is why we develop affordable photovoltaics to address global energy inequality and create cost-effective X-ray detectors to expand access to life-saving medical imaging, all powered by machine-driven materials synthesis and discovery.
We upscale perovskite solar cells to surpass the 25% sunlight-to-electricity conversion efficiency milestone.
We will NOT stop working on this until at least half of the globe is powered by green energy.
We develop sensitive X-ray detectors for next-generation medical imaging application.
We will NOT stop working on this until medical imaging becomes accessible, safe and able to resolve 10 μm features.
We allow our curiosity and intuition to discover and design unseen materials for unseen applications.
We develop and use Automated AI-driven platforms to discover new materials and to perfect known ones.
Single crystals are free of grain boundaries; this is why they promise and deliver the highest performing devices. We use robots to grow crystals, which then we integrate into functional devices. We believe that any material that relies on charge carrier diffusion will eventually equilibrate in its highest quality.
